Why is summarization such an important component of any school curriculum? No language course is complete without it, even though the skills it requires are considered to be beyond the ability of the pre-adolescent student. We do not realize how difficult a task summary writing is (particularly, in the form of a precis), and make no attempt to bring it within the range of the learner's ability and mental maturity.
