Abstract
The government’s flagship programme for universal elementary education across the country, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, has been implemented in 13 districts of Tamilnadu. Its child-centred activitybased learning has expanded the reach and improved the quality of elementary education. A similar programme, based on the principles ofconstructivism and self-directed learning, has been introduced for the middle school.
