Abstract
The guiding principles of the National Curriculum
Framework (2005) clearly outline that knowledge
should be connected to life outside school,
learning should shift away from rote methods
and the teaching-learning process should not be
mechanical. The curriculum should be enriched in
such a manner that it goes beyond the textbook
into building a holistic understanding among
children. Examinations should be flexible and
integrated into the regular classroom proceedings.
The school environment, as well as the teaching-
learning process, should be democratic.
