Abstract

Rising input prices, and consequently the cost of cultivation, alongside wholesale market prices of agri-commodities, influence income earned by farmer households. However, there appears to be significant variation and disparity in income earned by farm households – based on their size of landholdings, and by their source of income. Furthermore, the pattern of consumption expenditure also influences the in-hand income that farmer households are left with. In order to understand spatial distribution of low-income farmers in India in 2012-13, we study four important indictors – disparity in total income and consumption expenditure across states, number of agricultural households segregated by principal source of income, growth rate of annual income across farm households and share of income from principal sources in total annual income.
