Abstract

Philosophers and psychologists define play as an
activity undertaken in complete freedom, in pursuit
of no other purpose than the pleasure of doing it
and without being judgemental. Often, play creates
a make-believe or imagined world in which normal
things around us are given new meanings and uses.
While psychologists have dwelt upon the role of
play in the cognitive development and socialisation
of the child, philosophers have recognised its
importance in understanding and relating to the
world around us even as adults.
