Abstract

“Development” as State Identity? LocatingThe postcolonial Indian state has notably projected development-oriented identities. This article interrogates these identities vis-à-vis state realities surrounding the following questions: What are the projected state identities in contemporary India? How have they come to be adopted? Have they unraveled in practice and if so, how and why? What are the contemporary state’s realities, and how (mis)aligned are they with projected identities? What consequences does this (mis)alignment hold for development realities?
