Abstract

Hemraj Bhatt (1968 - 2008) was an assistant teacher in a government primary school in Uttarkashi district of Uttarkhand. His life was cut short by a tragic road accident in 2008, but during his short time as a teacher, his poems, his writings and the school he nurtured created a lasting impression on everyone who had known him. The pages of a diary that Hemraj kept, provide the glimpse of struggles and joys of this man, for whom teaching was not just another job. While his diary narrates the personal journey of a government school teacher, it simultaneously holds up a mirror to the larger education system in India. The English and Kannada translations and the original Hindi version of the diary is available
