Abstract

Flow theory (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990) has the potential to measure and describe the quality of a student’s experience while doing activities they enjoy. The purpose of this mixed method study was to understand flow experiences and explore how selected factors may impact a student’s frequency and quality of flow experience, especially seeing that learning and flow are inherently linked, in the context of an educational institution. A mixed methods design was employed in which qualitative and quantitative data was collected, analysed, and then merged. Quantitative data was collected in the form of repeated surveys through the Experience Sampling Method (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990) using a smart phone application. This data was used to find correlations between flow and the selected factors. Qualitative data was collected through semi-structured interviews with the respondents of the Experience Sampling Method, and was analysed through thematic analysis. The data was then merged and conclusions were drawn indicating the different types of activities that flow is experienced during, the differences between the flow experiences of different batches of the students, and how flow is correlated to the selected factors. It was seen that many participants experienced high flow in various activities—academics being a prominent one, and that flow was positively correlated with enjoyment, well-being, concentration, extraversion, and openness, and negatively correlated to stress. These results from the two approaches complemented each other and helped the study by gaining richness in understanding and answering the research objectives.
