Abstract

India is a multi-religious country, hence, the balance of all the religion collection is very important in the libraries. The present study is analyses the religious collection of Indian academic libraries to know the status of religious books in the university libraries of the country. The INDACT is a union catalogue of Indian university libraries that holds the bibliographic data of the Indian academic libraries. The study finds that the Indian academic libraries haven’t given proper attention while developing religious books in the library. Hence, this study suggests that the Indian academic libraries should give an equal opportunity while developing the collection. Another finding of this study is, according to University Grants Commission (UGC), India has 920 universities in the country but the INDCAT has received the books data from 187 university libraries, hence the UGC has to make a mandatory to submit a bibliographic data that helps the librarians for collection development as well as for interlibrary loan.
